An outsider can be defined as a person who is left out or unwanted. There are many feelings that may arise as a result of being an outsider such as, Lonlyness, anger, and sadness. An outsider may feel excluded at home, school, neighborhood, country, and society. Lastly there
are a variety of reasons that may cause one to be an outsider such as, abuse, beauty, race, beliefs, sexism, or religion.
There are different kinds of outsiders such as people who choose to be an outsider and those who don’t chose. There are also insiders and border liners. I am a border liner because sometimes i feel like i fit in and at some points i don’t feel that I fit in with friends. All in all outsiders have three different types.
In fact, stereotypes can cause someone to feel like an outsider. A stereotype is a belief about something or someone. An example of someone who has been stereotyped is Alicia, I had a conversation with her and she said it was because of her race. The situation that happened was, just because she is Mexican someone assumed she doesn’t speak/ understand English well. So what really happened was, during a conversation, she didn’t understand what they were saying. That’s when the person said, “What you don’t know English, referring to my nationality?” Then I asked her, “How did you feel?” She answered by saying, “Angry because it should not be an issue of nationality if the other person doesn’t understand the question.” This is one of many examples of stereotyping.
Another example of stereotyping comes from the book “The Outsiders.” Two characters from the book discuss stereotypes. Ponyboy, a greaser believes that socs are only problems and dangerous. That they only get in fights and are rich. Cherry, a soc, believes that socs are sometimes good and nice. She also says that some greasers start fights and drama. she also believes that greasers can be rich not just socs. Between these two who do you think will win the fight? (A greaser Ponyboy or a soc Cherry).
In the same way, stereotypes are also explored in C. Addichie’s Ted Talk called, “A danger of a single story.” In this presentation she discusses about stereotyping with different stories. One story is on books she wrote but she had a belief that all books have the same foods, drinks, music, and how they live. She finally read a book from her own kind and found out her race can be in books to. A second example is on Fiddy a poor boy who had no money, or food. So he went and lived with her family and her mom sent Fiddy’s family food and money. Stereotypes are all over...
Despite stereotypes, epiphanies challenge individuals to become better people. An epiphany is basically a dramatic change in life, from bad to good for example. An example of an epiphany is James he grew up in a small town called Somerdale in New Jersey. He is now 42 years old and looks 25 or something. Well epiphanies are people who become better.
Well, James grew up in Somerdale with 6 brothers in a small house. He went to catholic school along with his brothers. He was strictly put in catholic school and that changed him. He soon became a firefighter and after that journey he took another one and wen to the Navy. Soon after he realized “You only live once.” After his epiphany he saved people even though he wasn’t apart of anything anymore. He loved the navy so started working at Nassco. Well this is James Fisher’s epiphany.
In Addition to James, there is also an an example of an epiphany in the book “The Outsiders.” Johnny cade a character who went from zero to a hero. Johnny grew up around a rough life. He wanted to kill socs and all of them. But after being in a silent church with one person Ponyboy he all of a sudden didn’t care about killing the socs. Even though he has already killed one. After this epiphany he saved kids from a burning church. This character is from the outsiders.
In all, learning about outsiders, stereotypes and epiphanies has helped me to “Become developed because all of these can help make your life better in a way.” An epiphany, outsider and getting stereotyped can change your life in many ways. An epiphany makes you a better person, that’s a change in life. Being an Outsider can also change you it teaches you how to be independent and thats a change. Getting stereotyped that might change your ways because your
becoming a different type of person. “Things are rough all over,” and to
anyone that has been stereotyped or is an outsider “Stay Gold, Stay Gold.”
